Best car for around 10 grand that's manual, also newer than 2000, and I can't get a Miata because of my dear mother saying absolutely not, so don't say Miata. Preferably fast and RWD, but if it's awesome I can dig FWD or AWD.

Kinja'd!!!

I've been trying to find a Saturn Sky Redline as you guys may know, but they are hard as hell to find for around 10k. It's possible yes, but there are only 2, and both are far away.

differance between a miata & redline sky?

Well personally I like the Sky a bit more than a Miata, and a Sky is a bit bigger. Even though it's not a ton bigger I've somehow convinced my mom that it's safe enough, but there's no convincing her on Miatas.

Eh...the only ones around here are driven by major tools and I don't wanna be in that crowd. Plus, why get that when I can get the same engine in a RWD platform?

E39 540i, newest Mustang GT you can get for 10k, WRX, I'll look for some more stuff later.

If the Miata's off the table, is a New Edge Mustang GT 'vert not an option as well?

They may be a bit outside your price range, I'll admit. I see more convertibles than coupes on AutoTrader, thus the 'vert recommendation.

Don't care for the 540, don't want a Stang, and if I were to get a Scoob it would have to be an STi. I'm picky I know.

So get an STi. Don't worry, I'm pretty particular myself haha. What do you like/want in a car?

Kinja'd!!! Velocity- Peuguette Connoisseur > AM3R
07/29/2014 at 22:56

Kinja'd!!!0

I like lightweight throwable-ness, but with power still, and I want it to be turbo'd or supercharged so it's easy and cheap(ish) to tune for more power.

but there are only 2, and both are far away.

I thought that was why?

Uhuhuh... $10k could probably get you an E36 M3, but 90s.

Mustang

SRT Neon

S4

S60R

Uhh... I dunno what else.

Kinja'd!!! AM3R > Velocity- Peuguette Connoisseur
07/29/2014 at 22:58

Kinja'd!!!0

For $10k you're pretty much looking at an STi unless you're willing to put an aftermarket turbo on a NA car.

Kinja'd!!! Velocity- Peuguette Connoisseur > Logansteno: Bought a VW?
07/29/2014 at 22:59

Kinja'd!!!0

Was looking at the S4 and S60R but...reliability, at least for the Audi. And The S60R I've heard has numb steering.

Also, I can just keep waiting another month or so to find a Sky I guess, but if something just as good pops up sooner...

I don't really want to sacrifice reliability too much. It's hard to find an STi for 10k that's not been wrecked

Hmm.

This is a bit of a longshot, but there's also the Toyota Celica GT-S, Toyota Corolla XRS, and first-gen Toyota Matrix XRS (a.k.a. Pontiac Vibe GT). On the plus side, they have the 2ZZ-GE with 180 HP, a 6-speed manual and redline around 8,000 RPM in most applications. You can also brag that it's a Lotus engine since they tweak it and use it for their cars.

The downside is that I don't know how much aftermarket support there would be. All three Toyotas would probably have a decent aftermarket as far as performance mods and rice go, but only to a certain extent; they don't really hold a candle to the WRX, Neon SRT-4, Cobalt SS and other sport compacts in stock form.

Last year was 2000. They actually have a lot of safety features for their speed, and they still drive closer to a 2005 car than a 1990 car. Find one under 100,000 miles and you're good to go. Even better if it's a turbo (but I wouldn't recommend it, due to higher maintenence and difficulty to find in your price range). Don't worry though, even the non-turbos are still faster than most sports cars of its time, and will certainly outrun Mustangs, Camaros, etc.

Also, some had back seats.

Kinja'd!!!

The Audi TT is JUST within your budget. Not very reliable though.

Doe she know that a car that cost $50,000 in 1990 is WAY more safe, reliable, and better than a car that cost $12,000 in 2000?

There is literally nothing on the 300ZX that wasn't cutting-edge all the way up to 2010. Climate Control, Adjustable suspension, 4 wheel steering, SIDE AIRBAGS for christ's sake. You don't get those in a Saturn Sky.

Dude, this is my mom we're talking about. No, she does not know this nor does she care. The newer, airbaggier, and bigger a car is= safer to her. Not how well it's made or anything.

Kinja'd!!! GhostZ > Velocity- Peuguette Connoisseur
07/29/2014 at 23:19

Kinja'd!!!0

Still, show it to her, say SIDE AIRBAGS and tell her if she says no, you will make sure whatever you do get has as few safety features as possible.

Also, I'm going back to my original stance: If its your money, buy what you want. If it's not your money, refuse to let them buy you anything on principle and ride a bike until you can buy it yourself.

The easy way to tell the twin-turbo and non-turbo USDM 300ZXs apart is by checking the seating configuration, right? They were sold as non-turbo 2+2 seaters and twin-turbo 2-seaters, IIRC.

Kinja'd!!! GhostZ > Velocity- Peuguette Connoisseur
07/29/2014 at 23:23

Kinja'd!!!0

It's fine if you don't like 300ZXs, they're not for everyone.

Go buy an NA Miata for 4k+1k for insurance and gas. Tell your dad to keep his 5k and that if he's going to lord conditions over you, you don't want it. You need fun, sporty good-looking transportation, not a nice car or an expensive one. You'll have more fun in a 4k car of your own choice than a 20k car your parents sit you in, clearly.

Or, better yet, buy some sedan for 2-3k, and keep saving until you can dump 10k of your own money on a Sky later on, knowing that (again) you'll probably wreck whatever you buy.

If your parents won't let you spend your own money that you worked and earned on what you want, then there's bigger problems. You either aren't able to show them that you can be responsible, or you're too intertwined in their decisions that you aren't able to act without their approval when they are wrong.

If I were in your shoes, I would be looking for the cheapest form of base transportation I could find, ignore my parent's rules, spend $1000 on something to get me through the next year, sell it for what you bought it at, save everything else until you can afford something nice. Drive it into the ground and be responsible with it to show your parents that if they are wrong you don't need them to do what you think is right. Of course, the problem is, if you DO wreck it or get hurt, you will never live it down and they will never trust you with anything, because that means you actually aren't as responsible as you think.

...although, if I was really in your shoes I would spend the money on cryptocurrency speculation and make $500-$1000 a month on it, easily. But that's risky and sort of requires having a strong knowledge of private equity and software. Which, while you can learn it online (in fact, you can ONLY learn it online, they don't really teach this stuff) but I don't know if you have enough time to learn how to do that.

Your parent's decisions on your life are toxic. Get out, go to college, pay for it yourself, work hard, and separate yourself from their control.

RSX-S; K series engine is amazing, stock block can handle 350whp when turbo... 8k can get you into a clean RSX-S and leftover $$ can get you almost everything you need to turbo if you piece the kit together. Tuning will cost you a bit still.

Cheaper choice is 2000-01 Integra GSR.
